Bangladesh is set to change its ambassadors in 20 countries, with current diplomats being asked to return.
This change was confirmed by Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar, deputy press secretary to the chief adviser, during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy on Tuesday.
He said that the recommendations from political parties regarding diplomats’ replacements have been actively considered. Several diplomats are expected to be recalled in December as part of the Public Service Retirement (PLR) process.
The government has already initiated the appointment of new ambassadors for these countries. Some aspects of this process are administrative and no formal public announcement has been made yet.
Regarding the report submitted by the committee investigating the deprivation of officials in the past 15 years under the ousted Awami League government, Azad Majumdar noted that the committee had submitted its findings ahead of schedule.
The committee received around 1,540 applications and after verification, they recommended the promotion of 764 officials with retroactive benefits.
The government will review these recommendations before making a final decision.
The Deputy Press Secretary further said: “Though the new government’s leadership, some officials from the previous administration still remain in key positions.”
He emphasised that administrative changes are a regular process, with thousands of changes being made since the current government assumed office.
When the government deems it necessary, officials are either promoted, transferred or appointed and any serious allegations of collaboration with the previous government or other administrative reasons are also taken into account.
