Being encouraged by cheerful Bangladeshi supporters, Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by 4- 2 goals in the opening match of Bangabandhu Gold Cup Football tournament at Shams-ul- Huda Stadium in Jessore on Friday.
Shakawat Hossain Rony put Bangladesh ahead in the 20th but Edison Figurado of Sri Lanka equalised for the islanders three minutes later.
Bangladesh’s Zahid Hossain restored the lead almost immediately before Nabib Newaj gave the hosts two-goal cushion in first half with 42-minute strike.
Sanjeewa reduced the margin for Sri Lanka 6th minute into the second half.
Man of the match Rony cashed in on a defensive blunder of Sri Lanka to seal the deal in dying seconds.
Eight teams, including Bangladesh national and Under-23 teams, are participating in the fourth edition of the tournament.
