The minister for foreign affairs, AH Mahmood Ali, on Thursday said Bangladesh has urged the international community to put pressure on Myanmar government to stop oppression on minority Rohingya community bordering Rakhain state of the country.

‘Bangladesh has urged the international community to put pressure on Myanmar government to stop oppression on minority Rohingya community,’ he told a news conference at the ministry. The press conference was arranged ahead of UN Water Summit.

The minister will also brief diplomats stationed in Dhaka this evening.

Responding to a question, Mahmood Ali said very few Rohingyas were allowed to enter Bangladesh on humanitarian ground.

The Bangladesh government on Wednesday had summoned Myanmar ambassador Myo Myint Than and conveyed deep concern at the continued deteriorating situation in the Rakhine state that caused influx in which thousands of distressed Myanmar’s citizens including women, children and elderly people entered into Bangladesh.

Thousands more have been reported to have gathered at the border for sneaking into Bangladesh territory, the ambassador was told.

Despite Bangladesh’s border guards’ effort to prevent the influx, thousands of distressed Myanmar’s citizens including women, children and elderly people ‘continue’ to cross border into Bangladesh.

The secretary requested Myanmar to ‘assist’ Bangladesh to ensure the integrity of the border to prevent influx of people from Rakhine into Bangladesh.
