The historic Homecoming Day of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will be observed tomorrow (Friday).
On this day in 1972, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman returned to independent and sovereign Bangladesh after over nine and half months’ captivity in a Pakistan jail.
Bangabandhu was subjected to inhuman torture in the Pakistan jail where he had been counting moments for the execution of his death sentence that was pronounced in a farcical trial.
Bangabandhu inspired the Bangalee nation. He was the inspiration of the freedom fighters.
Under his undaunted leadership, the Bangalee nation earned the ultimate victory through the war. The defeated Pakistani rulers were finally compelled to release Bangabandhu from jail. The victory of the Bangalees attained its fulfilment with his release.
The ruling Awami League, its associate and front organisations and various socio-political organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day.
The programmes include placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Bangabandhu Bhaban in Dhanmondi in the city at 7am and holding a discussion at Suhrawardy Udyan at 2 pm where Prime Minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina will join as the chief guest.
Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages on the occasion.
Recalling with deep respect the great leader, the President in his message said, “With the return of the great leader, who faced deadly challenges of life for his brave leadership in various struggles for the country’s independence and who cherished the dream of sovereign Bangladesh for his whole life, the people from all walks of life were overwhelmed with endless joy and enthusiasm.”
He expressed the belief that the country’s independence and sovereignty would remain ever constant as long as all stay with the ideal of Bangabandhu.
The President also urged all, irrespective of party affiliation, to work unitedly to build a happy and prosperous Bangladesh.
In her message, the Prime Minister urged all to come forward to build a hunger -and poverty-free, prosperous, non-communal, peaceful Bangladesh being imbued with the spirit of liberation and build a “Sonar Bangla” as dreamt by the Father of the Nation where there will be no difference between the rich and the poor, and equal opportunity of prosperity will be available for all.
She also said, “We should take a fresh vow on the Homecoming Day of the Father of the Nation so that no evil force could disrupt the ongoing march of our progress and development.”
