Prof Ajoy Roy, father of slain blogger Avijit Roy, on Friday expressed his suspicion that Tariq Farseem Mannan, a teacher of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), might have had his hand in the murder.
Just before the attack on Avijit and his wife Rafida Afrin Banya took place in TSC area of Dhaka University, the duo had attended a meeting inside the Ekushey Book Fair area that was called by Buet teacher Tariq Farseem Mannan over Facebook, said Ajoy Roy adding that 4-5 Chhatra Shibir activists were also reportedly present at the meeting.
He noted that the Shibir activists were also invited by Farseem and they also got crossed during the meeting when 5-6 ‘unwanted’ people tried to attend the meeting.
Prof Ajoy Roy came up with the allegations while addressing a meeting organised by Nagarik Committee at Dhaka University’s RC Majumder Auditorium today.
He said the discussion called by Farseem continued till 8 pm on that day, where people involved with two magazines –‘Zero to Infinity’ and ‘Pie’ — were present. Abdullah Al Mamun, who is the editor of both the magazines and reportedly a Shibir activist, was also present on the occasion, Ajoy Roy said referring to information he has gathered.
He said he has already informed the Detective Branch (DB) officials about this suspicion along with some relevant information.
The DU teachers also noted that he is not at all happy with the progress of the investigation into the Avijit murder.
However, Tariq Farseem Mannan – whose name was shown as Farseen Mannan Mohammedy in is Facebook wall as well as in Buet website – denied the allegation brought against him when UNB contacted him over phone.
He said he invited a number of people to join the ‘science writers’ discussion mentioned above through a message thread in Facebook, and Avijit was also acquainted with some of them, including Himangshu Kor and Abdullah Al Mannan, a Buet student.
Asked whether he knows anything about Abdullah Al Mamun’s involvement with Shibir as it has been alleged by Prof Ajoy Roy, Farseem said Abdullah Al Mamun is a Buet student and he knows nothing about his Shibir involvement, if it is really so.
“The discussion took place in an open space inside the book fair. I can’t understand why should I be suspected? My wife also attended the discussion and we both left the book fair after the meeting bidding Avijit Da and Banya apa goodbye,” he said.
“I along with my wife met Ajoy sir on March 16 and discussed with him what we were really doing to clear his suspicion. I also showed him the photos of 12 people who attended the meeting. I’ve also shared the photo on my Facebook wall. Anyone can see it. So it’s incomprehensible to me why should I be suspected,” Farseem added.
Earlier on March 4, a four-member FBI team arrived here to assist the Bangladeshi law enforcement agencies to investigate the murder case. They are still in Dhaka.
All physical evidence of the incident have already been handed over to the FBI team for DNA tests.
On February 26, Avijit Roy, founder of Mukta-Mona blog, was hacked to death and his wife Rafida Afrin Banya injured seriously as unidentified criminals attacked them near TSC on the Dhaka University campus.

Hang any suspected “ISLAMIDST TERRORIST” in any Kangaroo court to take sweet revenge on the ” ENEMIES OF THE STATE, THE DEFEATED FORCES OF 1971. Id these are hanged then the other “ISLAMISTS” would be discouraged from challenging the authority of Hasina who has imposed secularism by direction. Eye witness is not required as the world has seen during the “INTERNATIONAL(?) War crimes Tribunals.
Even the suspects are not Jamatis still they should be exterminated because leader of the masses, the courageous crusader of secularism the daughter of the father of the nation, the greatest Bengali of all time would never allow our country to become another “ISLAMISTAN”. If they do not like our country let them go to any Islamistan. We also demand that the secular government of the JONO-NETRY Hasina should erect a marvel-statue of AVIJIT to be erected at the spot he was slain.
