Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Sunday said a united ‘social movement’ is a must to resist the Jamaat-Shibir who carried out brutal attacks on educational institutions and students in recent months.

“We’ve filed cases with the police stations concerned against those involved in the brutal attacks. But a united social movement is a must to resist the cruel attackers in future,” he told the House while responding to a supplementary question of Shirin Akhter (Feni).

Referring to brutal killing of schoolboy Monir Hossain, Nahid said the Jamaat-Shibir men were seen expressing their cheerfulness at the death of Monir Hossain who was burnt to death. “It’ll be difficult to resist the ‘cruel forces’ unless we remain conscious and launch a social campaign.”

He said the country had never experienced petrol-bomb attack in the past, and blamed the Jamaat-Shibir for such attacks in the pre-election period who showed cruelty against ‘our mothers, sisters and brothers’ during the War of Liberation in 1971.

Responding to another supplementary question of Kamal Ahmed Majumdar (Dhaka), Nahid said the government would take legal action if any educational institution under Bangladesh Madrasah Education Board will not comply with the mandatory rules – playing national anthem and hoisting national flag.

Earlier, Kamal Ahmed Majumdar said the authorities of the MPO-listed Madrasahs do not play national anthem and hoist national flag and give anti-liberation lessons to students.

He suggested the minister to take stern actions against those who are violating the rules.

In response, Nahid said, “I’m not ruling out your allegation. But we need specific proof so that we could take action for violation of rules.”

Nahid sought support from all in this regard.
