AL to take action if court finds the MP guilty: Ashraf
Golam Maula Rony is being whisked away by detectives after his arrest in Baridhara area in the capital Wednesday afternoon.
Embattled ruling party lawmaker Golam Maula Rony was arrested at Baridhara area in the capital Wednesday afternoon shortly after a Dhaka court cancelled his bail and ordered his arrest for beating up two journalists.
Following the arrest, the Awami League said it would take action against Rony if the court finds him guilty.
A team of detectives arrested Rony while he was waiting for his car at the gate of Bashundhara Residential Area around 3:40pm Wednesday, Jahangir Hossain Matabbar, deputy commissioner (South) of Detective Branch of police, told The Daily Star.
Around one and a half hours before the arrest, Metropolitan Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan cancelled his bail and issued an arrest warrant in connection with the Saturday assault.
Addressing a press briefing Tuesday, the embattled lawmaker insisted he did nothing wrong by assaulting Independent TV journalists.
Rony received the ad-interim bail on Sunday from another court in connection with the case filed by the private television channel on Saturday.
On Wednesday, complainant Yusuf Ali, an assistant manager of the Independent Television, urged the court of Magistrate Adnan to cancel Rony’s bail and issue an arrest warrant.
He said Rony threatened him after getting bail on Sunday with violence unless he withdrew the case.
Abu Zafar, a sub-inspector of Shahbagh Police Station and also investigation officer of the case, also told the court that he found evidence during primary investigation about the threat issued to complainant by Rony.
The court later issued order in favour of the petition.
Meanwhile, talking to reporters at the Secretariat, AL general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam said that the party would also take actions against Rony if he is found guilty by the court.
“The law will take its own course…No convict should remain in the party,” Ashraf, also LGRD minister, said.
Rony on Saturday beat up reporter Imtiaz Momin and cameraperson Mohsin Mukul, members of a team that produces a crime-investigative show, Talash, for Independent TV, at his Topkhana Road office in the capital.
The reporters went to Rony’s office on information that a bribe of more than Tk 1 crore, sent from Patuakhali, was to reach the lawmaker at his office.
Later, Rony sued Imtiaz and Mohsin accusing them of attacking him (Rony), sending him death threats and trying to extort money from him.
The journalists got bail from the High Court in the case on Tuesday.
