Arson attack on bus: Charges against Mirza Fakhrul, 25 others, dropped

A Dhaka court on Thursday set free 26 BNP leaders and activists, including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in an anti-terrorism case filed with the Ramna police station.
Dhaka metro sessions judge Kamrul Hossain Mullah on Thursday discharged them while accepting the charge sheet in the case. The court framed charges against Rabiul Islam Nayan, Zobayer Hossain and four others.
BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dhaka city BNP
secretary Abdus Salam, Mirza Abbas, joint secretary Aman Ullah Aman, Barkat Ullah Bulu, Saiful Islam Nirob, Salahuddin Ahmed, Obaidul Haque, Mohidul Islam Hiru, Jamaat leader Dr Safiqul Islam Masud
and Dr Safiq Rahman
were also among the discharged.
On January 5, 2015, during the period of Hartal sponsored by BNP and Jamaat, the accused reportedly set fire with a petrol bomb on a passenger bus at Paribagh intersection. Bus passengers
Sahina Akther and Farid Mia died in the incident. Bus dirver Babul Mia was also seriously injured. Ramna police sub inspector Ashraful Islam had filed the case with Ramna police station against the accused.
On April 29, 2015, DB police sub inspector Bahauddin Faruqui pressed the charge sheet before the court stating that the 26 accused in the case be excluded and discharged as he did not find their connection to the incident. The
ministry approved the discharge on September 30, 2015.
