Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called for immediate arrest of the culprits who torched a bus on Tuesday night killing a police constable.
Her Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad told bdnews24.com that the Prime Minister condoled the death and ordered the law enforcing agencies to nab the culprits on Wednesday.
The Prime Minister issued the order hours after police filed a case implicating leaders of the opposition 18-Party for the arson.
The incident took place at around 11.30pm on Tuesday, soon after the Opposition’s latest spell of countrywide blockade had ended.
Police constable Md Ferdous was burned to death and two others sustained injuries when miscreants torched the bus, parked in front of the Bangla Motor police box in the capital Dhaka.
A case has been filed with the Ramna police naming 18 Opposition leaders including BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. It also mentioned the involvement of another 18 to 20 unnamed persons.
Other senior BNP leaders such as the party’s Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Joint Secretary General Aman Ullah Aman, Barkat Ullah Bulu, Salahuddin Ahmed and Dhaka metropolitan member secretary Abdus Salam have been named as instigators along with Jamaat-e-Islami acting secretary general Shafiqur Rahman and leader Shafiqul Islam Masud, Ramna Police Station OC Moshiur Rahman earlier said.
Injured Constable Faijul Islam, 41, and bus driver Md Biazid, 25, were admitted to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
Salauddin Sohagh, a witness to the incident, said he had seen two persons fleeing on a motorbike immediately after the attack.
The opposition has been observing marathon blockades to press for their demand for a non-party caretaker government for elections oversight.
The BNP-led opposition boycotted the elections scheduled to be held on Jan 5.
Many people, mostly innocent, killed in rampant arsons and bomb blasts. Many Opposition leaders have also been detained.
