The soldier died while being airlifted to the Combined Military Hospital.

The deceased was identified as the driver of the truck Pravat Kumar. He was a sergeant of the 6th Engineering Battalion of Bogra Army.

Police said vehicular movement on the south lane (north-Bengal bound) of the rail-cum-road bridge remained suspended for about three years following the mishap.

Mozammel Haque, Chief Engineer of the operation and management department of Bangabandhu Bridge, said that the truck skidded off the road near Pillar No. 8 of the bridge at around 3:30pm on its way to Bogra Cantonment from Tongi.

The truck was loaded with some tugboats that were used during this year’s Biswa Ijtema, the second largest Muslim congregation after Hajj, on the bank of the Turag at Tongi in Gazipur.

Truck driver Pravat Kumar was seriously injured after he dashed against the railing of the bridge.

Abdul Halim, Inspector (Investigation) of Bangabandhu Bridge west end Police Station, said that Kumar died while being taken to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka by an army helicopter.

He said that vehicular movement on the south lane of the bridge resumed after 6:30pm.

The employees of the Metallurgical Construction Company of China, responsible for the maintenance of the bridge, and the police personnel of Bangabandhu Bridge (West Zone) Police Station took part in the rescue operation, he added.
