A 40-day programme of Awami League commemorating the 40th anniversary of martyrdom of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has kicked off.
A milad mahfil was held after Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam placed wreaths at Bangabandhu’s mazar at Tungipara.
In response to journalists’ query about the ongoing talks on midterm election, Ashraf rejected any possibility of the poll by saying that there is no such discussion within the party.
“Had there been any chance, the prime minister might talk about that but she did not. There is no possibility of another election before 2019,” he said.
When the journalists drew him on the celebration of Khaleda Zia’s birthday issue
Replying to another question whether Awami League had anything to say regarding Khaleda Zia’s birthday celebration right on the day of Bangabandhu’s assassination, Ashraf said: “We have repeatedly requested her [Khaleda] not to do so. We requested her to do the celebration in any other day than this mournful day, even if it had been her real birthday.”
“If she continues to do that, it evidently shows what kind of feeling and respect she really have for the people of the nation,” Ashraf added.
Stating that the culture of boycotting election is not appreciable, Syed Ashraf said if BNP was really a democratic party it would not boycott the election.
“Awami League always has respect for election and a commitment to democracy. This is why it participated in election even under the rules of Military Junta like Ayub Khan and Ziaur Rahman,” he said.
