‘All parties will contest’

Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam is optimistic that all political parties will take part in the upcoming general elections.

“Despite what they may say, they will join the polls,” he told an Iftar gathering on Monday, referring to the BNP-led opposition’s threat to boycott the elections if the constitutional provision for a caretaker government is not restored.

He also said his party would sweep the polls to form the next government.

The parliamentary elections will be held under the present government, for it has amended the Constitution, scrapping the provision for a caretaker regime to oversee national polls.

The BNP, however, has since been on the streets, threatening to boycott the election if it was not held under a non-party government.

But Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently reminded the BNP of the country’s experiences under the rule of the last army-backed caretaker.

Ashraf said: “The Army, a caretaker, or any other form of unelected government can never be an alternative to a political government.”

Ashraf said: “The Army, a caretaker, or any other form of unelected government can never be an alternative to a political government.”Amid BNP criticism over recent statements of the Prime Minister and her son Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy that Awami League will sweep the general elections again, Ashraf echoed the two.

“I have no information. But as a politician I can smell that Awami League will again to form government through an election under Sheikh Hasina,” he added.

Speaking at an Iftar gathering on July 23, Joy had said, “I have had information that Awami League will return to power.”

The remark by Joy dragged severe criticism by the BNP.

Later, Hasina herself answered to those ‘hard talks’ on behalf of her son. “When Joy said he got that information through polls, his remark was misrepresented.
