All candidates of 19 parties lose deposits in JS polls

All the candidates of 19 political parties lost their deposits in the January 7 general elections participated by 28 of the 44 registered political parties while 23 of the 28 contesting parties failed to win the election in any constituency.

According to the Representation of People Order, if a candidate fails to secure at least one-eighth of the total votes cast in a seat, their security deposit would be forfeited. The security despot for a candidate in the Jatiya Sangsad election is Tk 25,000.

The EC recently uploaded the centre-based results of the 12th JS polls mired by low turnout, rigging,

intimidation and boycott almost all of the opposition political parties, including the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

The results show that candidates of Trinamool BNP, Zaker Party, National People’s Party, Bangladesh Supreme Party, Bangladesh Sanskritik Muktijoddha, Bangladesh Nationalist Front, Bangladesh Tarikat Federation, Islami Oikya Jote, Islamic Front Bangladesh, Bangladesh Islami Front, Ganofront, Bangladesh Khilafat Andolan, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh, Bangladesh Jatiya Party,

Ganatantri Party, Ganoforum, Bangladesh Samyabadi Dal, Bangladesh National Awami Party-NAP and Bangladesh Muslim League-BML failed to secure their deposit in the polls.

The EC data also revealed that no vote was cast at 27 polling stations in the polls while 100 per cent votes were cast at two polling stations.

Apart from this, only one vote was cast at two centres while less than 10 per cent votes were cast in more than 500 centres.

In a sharp contrast, more than 90 per cent votes were recorded at above 100 centres.

About the zero vote at 27 centres, EC additional secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath told reporters that no one came to vote at those centres due to fear of fighting between the activists of rebel candidates.

When asked whether it was unusual to get 100 per cent votes, Ashok said that the presiding officers of those two centres mistakenly counted the uncast votes as cancelled votes.
