Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam said on Friday the next parliamentary elections would be held under an interim government comprised of elected representatives.
Ashraf, also the LGRD and cooperatives minister, said the AL would not accept any government formed with non-political and unelected people to oversee the next election.
He was talking to journalists after placing a wreath at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhanmondi marking the Six-Point Demand Day.
On this day in 1966, Bangabandhu launched a massive movement against the misrule of the Pakistanis on the basis of the Six- Point Demand which include autonomy for the then East Pakistan.
The AL spokesperson said there is still chance to reach a consensus over the formation of polls-time government. Now sincerity of the main opposition party is needed, he observed.
Ashraf hoped that BNP would place its proposal in the current session of parliament over formation of a polls-time government.
He said talks on the matter will have to be started in the parliament and then discussion could be taken place among different teams of AL and BNP.
“Hopefully, we’ll be able to bring a unanimous proposal in the house over the polls-time government through talks,” added the ruling party leader.
