The ruling Awami League has nominated the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party vice-chairman Shahjahan Omar for Jhalakathi -1 constituency to vie in the upcoming general election, scheduled to be held on January 7 next year.
AL deputy office secretary Sayem Khan confirmed the matter Thursday evening.
The news of AL nomination for the BNP leader came a day after his release from jail. The detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Shahjahan Omar from a house in the capital in the early hours of November 5 in a case of torching a bus in New Market area in Dhaka on November 4.
The BNP leader walked out of Jail on Wednesday after receiving bail.
On Monday, the AL announced that they had nominated Bazlul Haq Harun as the party candidate for Jhalakathi-1.
