Independent candidate Amanur Rahman Khan Rana won the Tangail-3 by-election by a huge margin on Sunday.
Rana bagged 97,808 votes while Awami League candidate Shahidul Islam Lebu got 44,531 in all 96 polling centres.
He was expelled from the ruling party on Friday last.
The voting began at 8:00am and ended peacefully amid tight security at 4:00pm without any break, reports our Tangail correspondent.
The polling a good number of voters were seen assembled at the polling booths to exercise their franchise power.
No untoward incident took place during the voting time.
Shahidul Islam cast his vote at Ratan Government Primary School centre in Ghatail pourasava round 8:30am while Jatiya party-backed candidate Syed Abu Yusuf Abdullah Tuhin at Gourangi Akashia Govt Primary School in Anohola union.
Amanur Rahman Khan Rana dropped his vote into the ballot box at Mukul Academy in the Ghatail pourasava.
Nazrul Islam and Md Selim Miah, presiding officers of Pakutia Public High School and Pakutia Girls’ High School, told the correspondent that 50 percent votes were cast in the two centres till 2:00pm.
Sunday was a public holiday for the constituency due to the by-election.
The by-poll held at the 96 polling centres under a municipality, a cantonment board and 11 unions in Ghatail upazila.
The parliamentary seat for the constituency fell vacant after the death of ruling Awami League lawmaker Dr Matiur Rahman on September 13.
No candidate from the main opposition BNP is contesting the by-election.

The number of voters in the by-polls is 2,71,329. Of them, 1,39,543 are females and 1,31,786 males.
BACKGROUND
Web cameras were installed at 67, out of the 96, polling centres which were identified as risky by the Election Commission.
A total of 27 officials from the Rapid Action Battalion, police and Ansar, including plain-clothes officials, have been deployed at each of the polling centers.
Besides, 24 additional police teams and six teams of the Border Guard Bangladesh are patrolling the constituency.
