The ruling Awami League on Friday finalised party nominations for the maiden elections to Zila Parishads in 61 districts across the country scheduled for December 28. The Local Government Nomination Board of the party at an adjourned meeting finalised the party nominations, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader told reporters emerging from the meeting. The meeting was held at Ganabhabn, the official residence of prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who presided over the meeting. Earlier, the nomination board on Thursday had adjourned the meeting till Friday after finalising party nominations for several districts. A total of 700 aspirants of Awami League collected forms seeking nomination for the position of chairman in 61 district councils in the country excepting three districts in Chittagong Hill Tracts. Most of the political parties including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party have said that they would not take part in the elections saying that almost all members of the electoral colleges that would elect zila parishad belong to AL. The electoral college is constituted with all the elected representatives of different local government bodies in a district like mayors, councillors and reserved councillors of the city corporations, municipalities, upazila parishad chairmen, vice-chairmen, members and reserved members and chairmen and members of union parishads. During last elections to the local bodies, AL-backed candidates won most of the positions, The electoral college will elect a 21-member district council comprising a chairman, 15 general members and five women members from reserved seats. There are 1,281 positions in zila parishads in 61 districts. The government in December 2011 appointed administrators to the 61 district councils across the country excepting the three hill districts.
