Taking part in BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s iftar party on Saturday, leader of various political parties slammed the ruling Awami League for not turning up at the programme.
The BNP chief hosted the Iftar party at LD Hall, the parliament members club, in the city where Awami League general secretary and its presidium members were also invited.
It was reported that a delegation of Awami League, led by its general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, would join the party, but it finally backtracked from its decision.
BNP acting secretary general Fakhrul Islam Alamgir termed the incident unfortunate and said it does not suit the country’s religious and political culture. “We had heard that they would come…it inspired us. Had they joined the iftar party, people would have taken it positively. But they didn’t turn up which is unfortunate.”
Fakhrul rejected Awami League’s version that they did not turn up because of the presence of Jamaat. “It’s not right. In the past they had met many times and carried a movement together. This can’t be the logic.”
Jatiya Party presidium member Kazi Zafar Ahmed said, “It’s a common courtesy in our political and religious culture to attend an iftar party if anyone is invited. We hoped the ruling party will be able to understand the language of people. But their absence is very unfortunate.”
In reply to a question, whether Jatiya Party will join with the 18-party alliance, he said, “Wait…well see every thing. Jatiya Party always moves ahead with a positive attitude.”
Former President and Bikolpo Dhara president Bodruddoza Chowdhury said it did not surprise him as the ruling party did not take part in the iftar party.
“But, we think they have lost a chance of a politics of consensus,” he added.
