Kazi Akramuddin Ahmed’s panel is leading in the FBCCI polls winning 11 out of the 15 Director posts from the Chamber Group.
FBCCI Election Board Chairman Ali Ashraf MP told bdnews24.com that Ahmed-led panel bagged 11 posts while his rival Annisul Huq-led panel got remaining four.
According to FBCCI rules, 30 directors are elected through direct voting – 15 from Chamber Group and as many from the Association Group, while 18 directors are nominated by the nine leading chambers and nine associations.
Standard Bank Ltd’s Chairman Ahmed is the President candidate from his panel. He has already been selected as a Director being nominated by the Bangladesh Association of Bankers, one of the nine associations that have the privilege.
The former FBCCI president Annisul Huq who was campaigning for direct election to the apex trade body is not a candidate but leading the Ganatantrik Parishad panel.
The counting of ballots of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry biennial election began at around 7:00pm.
Total 1,822 voters cast their ballots.
The Chamber Group’s results were announced within three and a half hours of counting as only 383 of its 390 voters cast the votes.
Out of 1,439 voters from the Association Group, 1,611 cast their ballots. The counting was continuing till fling this report.
The apex business body’s polls held on Saturday peacefully, barring some stray incidents.
The much-talked-about election began at 9:26am, 26 minutes behind the schedule following an altercation with former president Salman F Rahman and election board officials over sitting arrangement of polls agents and delayed arrival of ballot boxes.
The balloting continued till 5:30pm.
