Airtel to launch 3G next month

Its subscribers will get the new service without changing their SIM cards, Airtel’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Chris Tobit said at a media briefing in Dhaka on Wednesday.

“We are very happy to be rolling the new service for our customers. We are going to launch 3G service from October in some parts of Dhaka and Chittagong. In November, subscribers from Sylhet will get the service,” he said.

By December, 3G will be available in the seven divisional cities, said Tobit.

He believes the 5 MHz spectrum that Airtel has bought is enough to provide the services to its current volume of customers.

“I think we can provide the best 3G service in the country,” said the Airtel CEO.

The other two mobile-phone operators – Grameenphone and Robi – have already announced 3G services for their subscribers from October.
