The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Thursday asked Ahmed Ziauddin, an expatriate legal expert in Belgium, to explain why legal proceedings should not be initiated against him on charge of obstructing fair process of trial.

In a suo moto move, the three-member tribunal headed by Justice Obaidul Hassan asked Ziauddin to give his explanation through the Bangladesh mission in Brussels within 30 days of receiving the order copy.

The tribunal came up with the move after war crimes accused Muhammad Kamaruzzaman filed a retrial petition on the basis of alleged conversation between Ziauddin and Justice Nizamul Huq, former chairman of ICT-1.

The tribunal fixed February 17 for further order in this matter.

On December 11, last year, International Crimes Tribunal-1 Chairman Justice Md Nizamul Huq resigned amid controversy over the leak of his Skype conversation with Ahmed Ziauddin.

A day later, Justice ATM Fazle Kabir was made chairman of International Crimes Tribunal-1 and Justice Obaidul Hassan was made chairman of Tribunal-2.

Earlier the email and Skype accounts of Justice Md Nizamul Huq have been hacked. The Economist has in its possession the correspondence between the former tribunal chief and a Brussels-based legal expert.
