At an Eid-ul-Azha greetings-exchange programme in Dhaka on Monday, she dubbed the incumbent government an ‘illegal one’.

Khaleda, who leads the 20-Party Alliance, did not announce any date for her proposed agitation.

“This illegal government is occupying power. Everyone must unite shunning differences to save the country from it (the government),” she said.

The BNP chief further called on the government to step down taking responsibility for its ‘failure’ to properly run the country.

“We’d like to clearly state that the time for a movement has come. Demonstrations are not organised announcing time and date.

“The call for an agitation will be given at an opportune time. This government must be forced out,” the former prime minister said.

Khaleda issued Eid greetings to the nation and her party activists.

“People do not have a peace of mind. They are observing Eid amid tension and suffering,” she said.

She claimed that the government had failed to run the country.

“BGMEA representatives came to me. They said there was no power, no gas. They can’t deliver goods in time because of the sorry state of the highways,” Khaleda said.

She alleged that no new factories had opened during the tenure of this government. “Many garment factories are shutting down. Banks are sitting on money. The government is destroying the economy,” she said.

“And yet Chhatra League and Juba League’s racketeering continues. Since this government is illegal, it is only busy making money for itself,” she said.

“This illegal government can do nothing good for this nation. We must unite to oust them,” Khaleda said.

“I will call on the people to forget all differences and work together,” she said.

Diplomats of 42 nations exchanged Eid greetings with the BNP chief. Khaleda also hosted a luncheon in honour of the diplomats.

Families of missing party leaders and activists also met Khaleda Zia.

After the programme, Khaleda visited her late husband and party founder Ziaur Rahman’s mausoleum to pay her respects.

She laid flowers at the mausoleum and offered prayers. Senior BNP leaders accompanied her there.
