Chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) M Ghulam Hossain on Tuesday said legal action will be taken against Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus if his alleged irregularities and abuse of power as managing director of Grameen Bank is proved correct.
“Dr Muhammad Yunus got tax exemption of Tk 13 crore after earning more than Tk 50 crore in honorium, awards and royalty. Apart from that, he didn’t take permission from the (Grameen) bank’s governing board before going aboard as a public servant,” said Ghulam Hussain.
The NBR chief was talking to reporters after attending a function in the city.
The government recently made a move against Dr Yunus for his alleged tax dodging on his foreign incomes.
On Monday, the cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, asked the NBR to take action against Dr Yunus as per its report (placed in the cabinet) for his alleged tax evasion on his foreign incomes.
The cabinet said he got income tax exemption worth Tk 12,65,46,397, but as the government servant he is not entitled to take so.
The NBR in a recent report showed that Prof Yunus earned Tk 50,61,85,588 in between July 2004 and June 2011 in honorarium from 133 foreign organisations, awards from 10 organisations and royalty from 13 organisations.
However, Yunus Centre in a clarification on Monday night claimed that Dr Yunus did not violate any law as he has paid all the income taxes fixed by the NBR.
