Golam Faizullah Fahim, an accused in the case of attempt to murder a Madaripur teacher by hacking, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ in Madaripur sadar on Saturday, police said.
The reported gunfight took place hours after Fahim, an 18-year-old college student from Dhaka, was put on 10-day interrogation under police custody.
Madaripur police super Sarwar Hossain said they conducted a drive with Fahim based on his statements in Miar Char area around 7:30am.
Assailants, all of a sudden, opened fire from inside a jute field on the police vehicle, prompting policemen to retaliate, triggering a gunfight, he said.
Fahim tried to escape seizing the opportunity of chaos, added the SP.
After the gunfight, he was found bullet-wounded and taken to Madaripur General Hospital where physicians declared him dead, the SP said.
Police also recovered arms and bullets from the spot.
Madaripur police sub-inspector Ayub Ali, also the investigation officer of the case, earlier told New Age that he did not know ‘where and how’ Fahim was killed.
Golam Faruk, the father of accused Fahim, confirmed New Age that his son was killed.
Faruk said he was staying in Madaripur till 11:30pm on Friday to assist police in the case.
‘Police gave me a lift to catch a Dhaka-bound bus and later I came to know the matter this morning when I reached the city,’ he added.
Asked for comments on the claim of Fahim’s father, Madaripur police super Sarwar said he is trying to grab sympathy.
On Friday, Madaripur senior judicial magistrate Saidur Rahman placed Fahim on 10-day remand in hacking of Madaripur government college teacher Ripon Chakrawarty.
Madaripur police filed an attempt to murder case against Golam Faizullah Fahim and five others, whom the arrested suspect named as Jahin, Mejbah, Raihan, Polash and Salim.
Ripon Chakrawarty, mathematics lecturer of Madaripur Government Naziumuddin College, was hacked by three assailants at his rented house near his college immediately after he had returned home in the district town on June 15.
A group of three miscreants knocked the door of Ripon’s house at College Road behind the college around 4:00pm. As soon as the college teacher opened the door, the attackers hacked him.
Local people detained suspect Golam Faizullah after the attack.
