ACC sues Taposh, wife over 539C money laundering

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, former member of parliament for Dhaka-12 and Dhaka-10 constituencies and ex-mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation, along with his wife, Afreen Taposh, on charges of corruption and money laundering involving over Tk539 crore and suspicious transactions of $517,527.

ACC Director General Akhtar Hossain informed journalists about the decision on Sunday. The case was filed with the commission district office-1.

According to the ACC investigation team, led by Deputy Director Monirul Islam, Taposh allegedly misused his official positions to amass assets worth Tk73.19 crore, which are disproportionate to his known sources of income.

According to the commission report, between September 22, 2013, and August 19, 2024, Taposh reportedly conducted suspicious transactions of Tk539.16 crore through 27 bank accounts, including deposits of Tk304.33 crore and withdrawals of Tk234.82 crore.

Additionally, $263,736 was deposited and $253,791 withdrawn, totaling $517,527 in questionable transactions.

The ACC claims that Taposh knowingly concealed and transferred these illicit funds in violation of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004- Section 27(1), the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012- Section 4(2), and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947- Section 5(2).

Afreen Taposh has also been accused of acquiring assets worth Tk6.4 crore with the assistance of her husband.

She allegedly conducted transactions totalling Tk70.89 crore across nine bank accounts, including deposits of Tk39.82 crore and withdrawals of Tk31.07 crore.

Additionally, $202,259 was deposited and $193,704 withdrawn, resulting in $395,963 in suspicious transactions.

Afreen’s actions are alleged to violate the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004- Section 27(1), the Penal Code- Section 109 for abetment, and the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012- Section 4(2).
