The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an investigation into allegations that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and six family members acquired government plots in their names under the Purbachal New Town project.
ACC Deputy Director (Media) Akhter Hossain confirmed the development on Thursday, adding that the investigation has begun following media reports and complaints.
The allegations suggest that Sheikh Hasina, during her tenure as prime minister, misused her authority under Section 13(a) of the government’s powers.
This reportedly involved collaboration with senior officials of Rajuk to facilitate the allocation of six plots — each measuring 10 kathas — in the diplomatic zone of Sector 27 in Purbachal.
The plots were allegedly allotted to Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy, her daughter Saima Wazed Putul, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and Rehana’s children Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby and Azmina Siddiq.
The allegations, based on published reports, fall within the ACC’s jurisdiction. As a result, the commission has assigned its Special Investigation Branch to probe the matter.
“Based on the initial complaint, the ACC has decided to investigate the matter,” said Akhter Hossain. “We are gathering all necessary information and taking the required steps to address these allegations.”
