Bail hearings for cases against South Dhaka Mayor candidate Mirza Abbas has been deferred for a week after his lawyers sought more time.
The senior BNP leader will thus contest in the city polls slated for Tuesday without bail.
He remained out of public view for nearly three months, while his wife, Afroza Abbas, hit the streets to campaign for him.
He turned up in High Court on Apr 13 to seek bail but was handed a ‘split order’ in the sabotage cases by the bench of Justices Quamrul Islam Siddique and Gobinda Chandra Tagore.
The chief justice then assigned another bench to resolve the issue.
On Monday, Justice Ruhul Kuddus deferred the anticipatory bail hearings for the two cases against Abbas after his lawyers cited ‘security issues’ to plead for more time.
The senior judge had granted bail to Abbas while the other ordered him to surrender.
“The court has granted our plea. The hearings will be in the cause list on next Monday,” said Ragib Rouf Choudhury, one of his lawyers.
The BNP standing committee member is accused in two cases filed with Paltan and Motijheel Police.
The Anti-Corruption Commission is the plaintiff in the other case filed with Shahbagh Police for irregularities in allocating land plots.
Even though Abbas is not named there, he has sought bail ‘fearing arrest.’
A specific High Court bench hears ACC cases . The earlier bench had scrapped Abbas’s plea.
His lawyers then went to the specific bench and sought time for a hearing. The court then scheduled it on Apr 27.
Justices Md Moinul Islam and JBM Hassan, who hear the ACC’s cases, granted Abbas’s plea and put off the bail hearing for a week.
