Punishment of 1,949 RAB men shows that no one is above the law, the information minister says
One Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) man has committed a punishable crime every two days for the past 10 years since the birth of the elite force in 2004.
The information was interpreted from what Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu said on Thursday.
“A total of 1,949 RAB members have been punished since the formation of the elite force,” Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu said at a presser in the capital.
Calculations from the statement came down to 16 crimes committed by the elite force each month since 2004 until 2014, and one crime in every two days.
“The punishment of those RAB men have been on various terms, including firing them from work. So, it is evident that no one is above the law.”
The minister said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s proposal of disbanding RAB was political, instigative and intended towards conspiracy.
“If you (Khaleda) have a better alternative towards protecting law and order of the country, place the proposal. But, do not speak of disbanding RAB.”
RAB, which was formed in 2004 under the rule of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, has been under the radar blamed for extrajudicial killings.
Recently, the RAB subject came to the spotlight again after allegations rose regarding their involvement with the seven killings in Narayanganj.
