Voicing concerns at the recent controversy over the number of War Martyrs in the 1971 Liberation War, Gano Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain said it exposed the ‘unhealthy politics’ of the country.
“Controversy over number of martyrs is nothing but unhealthy politics. Can it be a matter of controversy? Raising question about it aimed at dividing the nation,” he said on Friday as journalists drew his attention to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s remarks on the number of martyrs at Gano Forum’s Arambagh office.
Earlier on December 21, Khaleda at a discussion at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh raised questions about the number of Liberation War martyrs.
“There’re controversies over how many were martyred in the Liberation War. There’re also many books and documents that state different figures,” Khaleda Zia said on that day.
The official number of the 1971 Liberation War martyrs is 30 lakh. Khaleda’s remarks triggered widespread criticisms, prompting Supreme Court lawyer Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi to file a sedition case against her.
Dr Kamal said there is no scope of instigating controversies over the matter that has been assured on December 16 and written on the constitution.
He said no political party has any right to do politics violating the country’s constitution.
The Gono Forum chief said those who are trying to divide the nation by questioning the number of Liberation War martyrs are practicing sick politics.
Mentioning that the dreams of martyrs are not still materialised, he urged all to get united to fulfill their dreams and take the country forward.
