BNP celebrates 37th founding anniv

 Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Tuesday celebrated its 37th founding anniversary across the country with a fresh vow to ‘restore’ democracy in the country.

BNP and its front and associate bodies marked the day with various programmes, including discussions, hoisting party flags atop its offices across the country and placing of wreaths at the grave of the party founder late president Ziaur Rahman.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, accompanied by party leaders and activists, paid tribute to the party founder by placing a wreath at his grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital in the morning and offered fateha there around 11:20am.

Leaders and activists of BNP’s associate bodies, including, Juba Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, Chhatra Dal, Mahila Dal, Krishak Dal and Sramik Dal, also placed wreaths at Zia’s grave.

BNP standing committee members Moudud Ahmed, Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, ASM Hannan Shah, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, vice-chairmen Abdullah Al Noman, Shah Moazzem Hossain, Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Selima Rahman, chairperson’s advisers Inam Ahmed Chowdhury, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, and BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon were, among others, present.

Several thousands BNP leaders and activists gathered on the grave premises with banners, festoons and portraits of Ziaur Rahman, Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman amid tight security.

The party arranged a discussion at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in the afternoon on the occasion. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia presided over it and urged the government to follow the politics of unity, welfare, development shunning vengeful one for implementation of the spirit of the Liberation War and restore democracy.

BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed said the restoration of democracy is now the main challenge for their party. “Democracy will be reestablished in Bangladesh Inshallah under the leadership of Khaleda Zia with people’s mandate though a free and fair election.”

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, in a message, congratulated people, party leaders, workers and activists and well-wishers on the occasion of the founding anniversary.

On this day in 1978, General Zia founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) with a 19-point programme to build Bangladesh as a self-reliant country.
