A delegation of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has brought abducted Naik Abdur Razzak back from Myanmar after eight days of his abduction from Jadimura area of Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar.
The BGB team reached Teknaf around 6:15pm Thursday.
Myanmar’s BGP handed Razzak over to BGB around 4:30pm Thursday, Deputy Commander of Cox’s Bazar BGB Maj Aminul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune.
Earlier in the day, a flag meeting was held between BGB and Myanmar’s BGP over Razzak’s handover.
Lt Col Abu Jar Al Zahid, commanding officer of 42 BGB Battalion, led the seven-member BGB delegation while BGP 2 Battalion Commander in Maungdaw Brig Tinkoko led the Myanmar team in the flag meeting.
Razzak was abducted along with his SMG by the BGP members in the Naf River near Jadimura area of Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar on June 17. In the incident, another BGB member, Biplob, was shot.
This is the second such incident since the Myanmar authorities abolished its Nasaka force in July 2013 and deployed the Border Guard Police.
One year ago, on May 28, 2014, another BGB naik named Mizanur Rahman was allegedly abducted and killed by the Myanmar frontier force near the Paanchhari border in Naikkhongchhari of Bandarban district.
Two days later, the BGP was supposed to return Mizanur’s body to the BGB. But, when the Bangladeshi border guards went to receive the body, the BGP men opened fire on them instead of handing over the body.
BGB said Naik Mizanur was patrolling the border to check Rohingya infiltration.
