National committee to protect oil-gas, port-power and natural resources on Sunday threatened to launch a stronger movement against the government for awarding power projects to foreign companies, including Indian Reliance and Adani Group.
‘We’ll build a greater movement against the government after Eid to force it to scrap the deals so far signed against the national interests,’ said Professor Anu Mohammad, member secretary of the national committee, while addressing a rally in front of National Press Club.
The committee organised the rally as part of its countrywide protests against the government’s different deals and also realise its seven-point demand, including expulsion of Asia Energy, realising penalty from Canadian company Niko for Tangratila gas explosion, penalty from US company Chevron for Magurchhara gas explosion and cancelling Rampal coal-fired power plant near the Sundarbans.
The national committee observed June 14 as Magurchhara Day to register protest against the blowup at a gas field in Sylhet.
Held with committee convener Shahidullah in the chair, the rally was addressed, among others, by Communist Party of Bangladesh leader Ruhul Hossain Prince.
They urged the government to take necessary measures to realise Tk 50,000 crore from US and Canadian companies in compensation for their wrongdoings in the gas fields.
Condemning the unsolicited deals signed with Indian Reliance and Adani Group to set up 4600MW power plants under Speedy Power and Energy Supply Act, the leaders said the nation would never allow the government to implement such ‹anti-nation› deals.
