The movement after Eid is not aimed at capturing power, it is to bring back people’s right to vote, the BNP says.
Spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Wednesday the BNP was on a ‘just path’ and would be victorious.
“Let me be clear that we will wage our movement not to grab power but to bring back people’s right to vote,” he said.
“Our path will not be easy.”
A ‘fascist usurper government’ was pressing down on them, he claimed.
“To earn our freedom we must have an iron-strong unity,” he said, addressing a gathering of leaders from BNP and its allied parties.
He called on them to be watchful of those who wanted to “cut a deal with the government” to get to power.
The Iftar event was hosted by Islamic Party, a 20-party Alliance member, on its 35th founding day.
“We lost 310 activists in the hands of their law enforcement. During the movement, 65 people were abducted,” Fakhrul said.
“After all these sacrifices, those who say not going to election was a mistake are betraying the entire nation,” he added.
He warned the government, saying, “This fascist government will have to go. One day, through our movement, a people’s government will come to power in this country.”
The BNP leader condemned the Israeli killing of civilians in Gaza.
“Palestinians are being murdered by the barbaric Israeli forces. The same is happening in Bangladesh. Even in the month of Ramadan they are killing and abducting people,” he said.
“The ruling party has turned the country into a safe haven for their crimes. They have not only hurt democratic and religious spirits, they have also looted billions from banks and bankrupt the economy,” he alleged.
The BNP acting secretary general criticised the government’s plan to give Parliament the power to impeach Supreme Court judges.
“They want to firmly establish their one-party rule on the country,” he said.
