He said the BNP leaders had no moral right to talk about the plight of those affected by the tragedy.
Speaking at an event in Dhaka on Friday, Mahmud, Awami League’s Publicity and Publication Secretary, said the government had rushed help to the victims within one hour of the crash.
“Our leaders and activists participated in the rescue drives. And the BNP leaders spent tens of millions of taka in movements and long marches. They didn’t stand by the people devastated by the Rana Plaza tragedy.”

His reaction came after two senior BNP leaders commented on the government role in management of the post-Rana Plaza affairs.
Speaking at a human-chain programme on Thursday, party’s Standing Committee member Rafiqul Islam Miah questioned the government living up its commitment to compensate the affected and arrange employment for them.
In another programme on the same day marking the first anniversary of the Rana Plaza accident, BNP’s acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that the fund meant for Rana Plaza victims had been ‘misused’.
Mahmud said: “The BNP and foreigners are now hatching conspiracy against the country’s garment industry.”
“Foreign friends had made many pledges to the workers at Rana Plaza. But they haven’t fulfilled even a single one. (Prime Minister) Sheikh Hasina’s government is moving ahead despite many obstacles.”
Awami League Hawkers League organised the discussion on the occasion of the historical Mujibnagar Day that fell on Apr 17.
