Eminent citizens and civil society members on Thursday sought Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s intervention to rescue abducted Abu Bakar Siddique, husband of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers’ Association (Bela) chief executive Syeda Rizwana Hasan.
“We hope the law enforcing agencies will regain the trust of people in them and government by rescuing abducted Abu Bakar Siddique immediately. We seek the honorable prime minister’s intervention in this regard,” TIB executive director Dr Iftekharuzzaman told a press conference on behalf of the citizens at BRAC Centre Inn in the capital.
Voicing deep concern over the security of Abu Bakar Siddique, he said there has been no visible progress in tracing him despite assurance from the top level of the government in this regard.
Iftekharuzzaman said the country’s general people are shocked and concerned when they saw miscreants kidnapped the husband of an internationally reputed environmental activist in broad daylight.
Speaking at the press conference, Syeda Rizwana Hasan said the law enforcing agencies are trying their best to rescue her husband. “I haven’t yet lost my hope of having my husband back…I ‘m getting visible support from the law enforcing agencies and the government.”
Replying to a query, Rizwana said she had not informed about her husband’s conflict with anyone in her 20 years of conjugal life. “Nobody phoned me yet demanding extortion and claiming that my husband has been abducted.”
The Bela chief executive said some private companies suffer financial losses due to her legal steps taken to protect the country’s environment. “So, those should be brought under the investigation.”
A total of 44 eminent citizens expressed their solidarity with those organized the press conference and demanded immediate release of Abu Bakar Siddique unhurt and action against those involved in the abduction.
TIB chairperson Advocate Sultana Kamal, Information Commissioner Prof Sadeka Halim and columnist Syed Abul Maksud, among others, spoke at the press conference.
Miscreants abducted Abu Bakar Siddique from Fatullah area on Dhaka-Narayanganj link road on Wednesday afternoon while he was returning to Dhaka city from his workplace in his car.
Meanwhile, Rizwana filed a case with Fatullah Model Police Station on Wednesday night in connection with the incident.
