BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir condemned police attacks on the party’s demonstrations at different parts of the country on Sunday.
In a statement, Fakhrul demanded punishment of the police members responsible for the attacks on BNP’s demonstrations held in district towns across the country in protest against the government’s ban on holding rallies and public meetings in Dhaka city.
He said the police attacks on the BNP’s demonstrations came as part of the Awami League government’s plan to bury democracy already weakened by its corrupt activities.
“The government has indulged in massive misdeeds like forced disappearances, killings, secret killings and extortion as part of its blueprint to establish a one-party rule in the country,” he alleged.
Police hit and injured many leaders and activists by firing shots at BNP’s demonstrations in Sirajganj, Rupganj of Narayanganj, Kurigram and elsewhere in the country.
“The desperate behaviour of the police proves that the government doesn’t understand the language of democracy and failed to realise the public demand. So, the government wants to hang onto power illegally depending on the police,” Fakhrul said.
