Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad, a key ally of the ruling Awami League, is worried over the country’s present political situation.
“The BNP is pushing the country towards civil war. The nation is afraid about what might happen in future. The signs are ominous,” Ershad told reporters after attending an Eid congregation in his constituency, Rangpur, on Wednesday.
If the situation persists, Ershad thinks the country’s democratic system will collapse.
“We want a peaceful handover of power. But that possibility is unlikely. They (BNP) are threatening a civil war and asking people to prepare with machetes and axes.
“If this situation persists children won’t be able to go to school and the country will find itself in a stalemate. We don’t want this politics, we want peace,” the Jatiya Party chief said.
Ershad attended Eid congregation at the main Eidgah in the Rangpur Collectorate ground around 10am.
He celebrates Eid-ul-Azha in Rangpur but remains in Dhaka during Eid-ul Fitr.
Ershad has sacrificed a total of 11 cows during this Eid.
