Opposition BNP on Wednesday chalked out an eight-day programme to celebrate the party’s 35th founding anniversary and the jail release days of the party chairperson and its senior vice chairman.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the programmes at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office after a joint meeting of the party.
The party has centrally taken a two-day programme to mark the founding anniversary. The programmes include a discussion at the Engineers’ Institute followed by a cultural function by Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (Jasas) on August 31. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will attend the programme.
Besides, party and national flags will be hoisted atop all offices of the BNP across the country in the early morning on September 1. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia along with the party leaders and activists will place wreaths and offer fateha at the mazar of its founder late president Ziaur Rahman at 10.00 am on the day.
Meanwhile, BNP and its associate organistions have taken various programmes to mark the 6th jail release day of BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman.
On the occasion, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal will bring out a colourful rally from Suhrawardy Udyan at 3pm on September 2 while BNP will organise a discussion at the Engineers’ Institute in the afternoon on September 3.
Besides, on September 4, Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal will screen a documentary on the Tarique’s recent speech in London. The venue will be informed later. Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal will bring out a colourful procession and stage a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan at 3pm on September 5.
Dhaka city unit BNP will take out a colourful procession from Suhrawardy Udyan on September 10, marking the jail resale days of Tarique and BNP chief Khaleda Zia.
BNP will arrange a discussion at the Engineers’ Institute on September 11, marking Khaleda’s jail release day.
Meanwhile, Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal will also arrange a discussion on September 9 marking the party’s founding anniversary. The venue for the programme will be announced later.
On May 1 in 1978, late President Ziaur Rahman, a hero of the War of Liberation, formed the BNP on this day in 1978 with a 19-point programme to build a self-reliant Bangladesh.
The party added a new dimension to the country’s politics introducing the ideology of ‘Bangladeshi Nationalism’ with the key slogan of ‘politics of development and production’.
Within the party, power has remained exclusively in the hands of the Zia family with Khaleda Zia leading the party since the assassination of Ziaur Rahman in 1981.
The BNP ruled Bangladesh for several terms. Party chairperson Khaleda Zia became the country’s first woman Prime Minister (PM) after winning the 1991 general election.
