Opposition BNP on Thursday alleged that the government is planning to manipulate the results of Gazipur City Corporation polls into their favour by creating an anarchic situation and intimidating voters.
“We’ve came to know the ruling party may create a chaos through provocations. The ruling party thinks taking advantage of the disorder it’ll be able to take the results of the polls in their favour by using the administration and intimidating voters,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He brought the allegation at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
The BNP spokesman once again urged the Election Commission to deploy army to ensure free and fair holding of the election billed for July 6.
Fakhrul also alleged that two strong teams — one led by Prime Minister’s adviser HT Imam at PMO and another led by Communications Minister Obaidul Quader and state minister for LGRD Jahangir Kabari Nanok at Uttara — have been constituted to monitor and manipulate the GCC polls.
He said the ruling party leaders are violating the election code of conduct and carrying out various evil deeds to influence the polls. “It’s a naked example of the government’s evil design.”
The BNP leader also alleged that the Prime Minister’s Office is directing the local administration and returning officer about engaging law enforcers, and presiding officers to conduct the election. “The PMO is forcing the returning officer and local administration to act on their directives in a bid to rig the vote.”
A huge amount of taka has been allocated from the PMO, he said, adding that the ruling party men under the supervision of the Prime Minister’s office are distributing the money in the areas where mainly the poor and workers live.
Fakhrul alleged that the government officials, employees of Islamic Foundation and other offices are being forced to work for ruling party-backed mayoral candidate Ajmat.
Criticising the Election Commission for what he said its inaction against the ruling party leaders for violating the election code of conduct, the BNP spokesman said, “We want to clearly sate that the Election Commission must shoulder the responsibility for any situation if it fails to hold the election fairly.”
