The High Court on Tuesday directed the law enforcement agencies to arrest the killers of Bishwajit Das, whose identities have been published in the media, within 24 hours.
In response to a petition, the court directed the inspector general of police to take measures, so that the culprits cannot escape arrest.
It also ordered the IGP to inform the officials concerned at all the departure points including airport and land ports about the court order, so that the alleged killers cannot leave the country.
The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Farid Ahmed said the government will have to submit a report before the court on December 13, if it fails to nab the criminals within the stipulated time.
The HC bench came up with the order following the petition filed by Nazim Ahmed, the editor of weekly Shoptoporno, seeking its directive on the government to arrest the persons involved with the killing of Bishwajit Das within 24 hours.
Nazim filed the petition on Tuesday also seeking the HC order on the government to pay adequate compensation to the family members of Bishwajit.
The Shoptoporno editor filed the petition following a report published in The Daily Star on Tuesday that named some BCL activists as the killers of Bishwajit.
The petitioner prayed to the court to declare ‘illegal’ the police’s inaction in saving the life of Bishwajit and including the names of BCL men Rafiqul Islam, Noore Alam, Mahfuzur Rahman, Obaidhul Quader Emdadul Haque and many others in the Bishwajit murder case.
