Police continued the countrywide arrest drives as 641 more people were arrested in Dhaka city on Wednesday in connection with violence and vandalism during student protests for quota reform for government jobs that left at least 162 killed.
At least 178 others were arrested in Chattogram, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Barishal, Mymensingh, Narsingdi, and Feni on Wednesday.
Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Wednesday sent at least 601 people, mostly leaders and activists of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its ally Jamaat-e-Islami, to jail.
Several people were also placed on remand in the cases filed on charges of violence in the city.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police assistant deputy commissioner KN Roy Niyati told New Age that 73 cases have been filed so far over violence during the protests in Dhaka.
BNP leader Saiful Islam Nirob was among seven people remanded in police custody in a case filed with the Gulshan police station.
Apart from this, the Dhaka CMM court also sent Jamaat-e-Islami central leader and former lawmaker Abdullah Mohammad Taher and six others on five-day remand in a case filed with the Dhanmondi police station.
Quoting Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s assistant deputy commissioner, Tareq Aziz, New Age staff correspondent in Chattogram, reported that at least 46 people were arrested on Wednesday, bringing the total number of arrests to 373 in the port city.
He added that 16 cases have been filed over vandalism and sabotage during the protests in Chattogram.
New Age staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported that the police arrested 37 more people, mostly leaders and activists of the opposition parties, in the past 24 hours beginning Tuesday morning, and one more case was filed in Rajshahi.
With this, 17 cases have been filed with various police stations in Rajshahi, and the police have so far arrested 216 people since July 18.
Rajshahi district police spokesperson and additional superintendent of police, Md Rafiqul Islam, said that the new case was filed with Godagari police station on Wednesday morning, and they had arrested 22 more people in the past 24 hours in 10 cases filed at nine upazilas in the district.
Abdul Matin, officer-in-charge of Godagari police station, said that sub-inspector Md Al Imran filed the case against 12 named and 12–15 unnamed people under the Explosive Substances Act and the Special Power Act.
Md Jamirul Islam, chief information officer and additional deputy commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said that they had arrested 22 more people in the past 20 hours in the seven cases filed with various police stations.
New Age correspondent in Mymensingh reported that at least 69 suspects were arrested and seven new cases were filed on Wednesday totaling the number of cases to 14.

Quoting Rangpur Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner (crime) Abu Maruf Hossain, New Age Rangpur correspondent reported that 20 suspects, including Mahiganj Jaamat leader Md Azizul Islam, Rangpur city’s 12 no. ward councillor Md Mokbul Hossain, and Dewanbari Shop Owners’ Association president Manowar Hossain Ripon, were arrested.
Eight cases have been filed in Kotowali and Tajhat police stations, and a total of 95 people have been arrested in the past six days.
New Age correspondent in Barishal reported that the number of arrests reached 99 as 20 more people were arrested by the metropolitan police and district police on Wednesday.
New Age correspondent from Narsingdi reported that joint forces conducted a drive on Wednesday at Jamea Quasemia Kamil Madrassah and arrested five people, including two teachers and a student, in connection with violence in the district.
The number of arrests was 2,500 until Tuesday across the country.
