The finance minister has termed ‘unfortunate’ the release of imported goods worth billions of taka from the Chattogram Port in cyber fraud involving the server of the National Board of Revenue or NBR.
AHM Mustaf Kamal says preventive measures should have been taken much earlier.
He was speaking to the media at the Secretariat in Dhaka on Wednesday on newspaper reports that a ring of frauds got consignments worth billions of taka released from the port after stealing IDs and passwords of government officials who use the NBR server from 2016.
“It happened beforehand. We will see what measures can be taken. I think we should have taken steps much earlier,” Kamal said.
“I think the server should be more secure. Frankly speaking, it’s unfortunate for us,” he added.
He also expressed frustration over investigating such incidents.
“You’ll know when we form any investigation committee. But what will be the outcome? Will the committee be able to say what should be done to prevent these?” he asked.
“Investigation committees are formed whenever something happens, but we rarely get any result,” he added.
