All eyes are on the meeting between US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday in Kolkata, amid speculation that Hillary may quiz Banerjee about her opposition to the Teesta water sharing agreement with Bangladesh. This would be unusual and may have a whole lot of unintended consequences, reported The Times of India on Wednesday quoting sources.Hillary will be coming in from Bangladesh after meeting Sheikh Hasina.
It is to be expected that the Bangladesh leadership would detail their biggest problem with India — the Teesta imbroglio.
Teesta has been touted as a failure of Indian foreign policy, and Mamata Banerjee has been held responsible.
Hillary would be the most high-profile foreign dignitary to visit Kolkata after Mamata ousted the CPM and took over government last summer. Mamata has recently named one of the most influential people by TIME magazine.
Since her election, though, Mamata has fought an uphill battle against a public opinion that has turned against her.
