Police said the vessel capsized around 11:30am on Saturday in the district’s Raipura Upazila.
Local police OC Azharul Islam told the media that the boat sank because it had too many passengers.
“Locals managed to tug the sunken trawler to the bank after they heard the passengers screaming.
Most of the passengers managed to swim to the shore. Bodies of nine people, including children have been found,” he said.
The Fire Service divers are conducting rescue operation to trace the missing, added OC Islam.
Seven of the victims have been so far identified. They are ‘Yasin’, 7, Mazeda Nesa, 50, ‘Jerin’, 6, ‘Marzia’, 4, Maleka Khatun, 50, ‘Rakibul’, 8 and ‘Samrat’, 8.
