A tribunal here on Sunday sentenced nine people to death and 12 others to life term imprisonment for killing Atgharia UP chairman in Faridpur district Moloy Kumar Bosh last year.
The condemned convicts are: Imamul Hossain Tara Mia, 65, Bakul Matabbar, 32, Mizanur Mollah, 22, Mamun Matabbar, 23, Hashem Molla, 47, Mosharraf Mollah alias Mosha, 32, Maniruzzaman Sheikh alias Monir, 28, Ujjal Bepari, 28, and Belayet Hossain Mollah, 22.
Those awarded life time imprisonment are: Azad Mollah, 38, Sohel Mia, 26, Aminur Matabbar, 36, Sattar Mollah, 25, Nazrul Sheikh, 28, Nasru Khan, 29, Hatem Mollah, 45, Waliur Rahman Oli, 45, Imran Matabbar, 25, Akkas Shikder, 24, Miraj Sarder, 28 and Sentu Matabbar, 22.
The Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 also sentenced another man, Jahangir Fakir, 28, to two years’ imprisonment.
Besides, eight other accused were acquitted as the prosecution failed to prove the charges brought against them.
Of the total 30 accused, 27 were present in the dock today, while three convicts, Maniruzzaman, Jahangir and Akkas, remained absconding.
All the convicts were residents of different villages in Saltha upazila of Faridpur district.
According to the prosecution, Moloy Kumar Bosh, 45, Atgharia union parishad chairman in Saltha upazila of Faridpur district, was stabbed to death near a house in Faridpur Kotwali area on February 7, 2012.
Babita Bosh, the victim’s wife, later filed a case against 30 people with Kotwali Police Station.
The case was transferred to the tribunal in the capital from a court in Faridpur on November 29 last year.
Charges were framed by the tribunal against the accused on that day.
After examining the records and 19 witnesses, Judge Motaher Hossain of the tribunal handed down the verdict this noon.
Advocate SM Rafiqul Islam, Syed Rezaur Rahman and Kazi Nazibullah Hiru stood for the state while TM Akbar and Sharfuddin Mukul for the defence.
