8 killed in road mishaps

At least eight people were killed and 50 others injured in four separate road accidents in Gazipur, Munshiganj, Chuadanga and Jamalpur districts on Friday.

In Gazipur, three people were killed and nine others injured when a bus collided head-on with a van in front of the Air Force gate at Rajendrapur on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway.

Those killed in the Gazipur accident were identified as the bus conductor, ‘Liton’, 26, of Mymensingh’s Bhaluka Upazila; his helper ‘Raju’, 25, of Gazipur Sadar Upazila; and Ruhul Amin Rokon, 27, of Mirzapur Upazila in Tangail.

Sergeant Iqbal Hossain of the Nawjor Highway Police Outpost told bdnews24.com that a Dhaka-bound bus collided head-on with van coming from the opposite direction. The accident occurred around 9am, leaving 12 passengers of both vehicles injured.

Liton and Rokon died on their way to hospital, while Raju succumbed to his injuries at the Sreepur Upazila Health Complex.

Sub-Inspector of the Sreepur Police Station Farid Uddin said that a critically injured woman, ‘Khadeza’, 50, wife of Abul Kashem Bepari of Isapur area under the Khilgaon Police Station in Dhaka, was transferred to Dhaka’s National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), widely known as Pongu Hospital. She was taken there from the Sreepur Upazila Health Complex.

In Munshiganj, three people were killed and at least 40 others injured when a BTRC bus rammed a three-wheeler passenger carrier, locally known as ‘tomtom’, in the Sirajdikhan Upazila in the evening.

The identities of the deceased were not immediately known.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Zakir Hossain Majumder told bdnews24.com that both the bus and passenger carrier fell into water-filled roadside ditch near Chaltipara around 6:30 pm because of the impact, leaving three men dead on the spot.

At least 40 people were rescued from the submerged bus and admitted to the Sirajdikhan Upazila Health Complex.

The police fear more bodies might be lying trapped inside the two submerged vehicles.

Local MP Shagufta Yasmin Emily, also a whip in Parliament, visited the spot, making inquiries about the rescue and treatment arrangements.

The district’s Deputy Commissioner Saiful Hasan said that the vehicular movement on the highway was normal and that steps were being taken to retrieve the two vehicles.

In another accident, this time at Chuadanga, a man was killed in a head-on collision between a tractor and a motorcycle at Rudranagar village in the Damurhuda Upazila around 4:30pm.

Motorcyclist Saidul Islam, son of late Kader Box of Aaramdanga village in the Upazila, died on the spot. Another rider ‘Ashraful’, 20, was injured in the accident and admitted to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital.

OC of the Damurhuda Police Station Ahsan Habib said that Ashraful and Saidul on their way to Darshana when the tractor hit them.

A police officer said Saidul’s body was handed over to his relatives without autopsy in deference to the family’s wishes.

In Jamalpur, a Sarishabari-bound bus from Dhaka ran over a six-year-old girl on the Sarishabari-Dikpait road at Kargram, in the Sarishabari Upazila, around noon. The child was killed on the spot.

She was identified as ‘Madhabi’, daughter of Abdul Mannan of Shirongazi village of Dhanbari Upazila in Tangail.

Sarishabari Police Station OC Kamrul Ahsan said the child was crushed while she was crossing the road with her maternal grandfather.
