At least seven people were killed and 20 others injured in as a speeding bus hit a parked truck at Jalalpur in Nabiganj of Habiganj on Friday night.
Six of the deceased were identified as Sohada Begum, 40, wife of a Sylhet Awami League leader Mostak Ahmed, Mehedi, Mostak’s son, Abu Saleh Hawladar, a soldier of Jalalabad Cantonment, Mahsin alias Tipu, 40, a superviser of Hanif Paribahan, hailing from Lakshmipur, its drivers’s assistant Tarikul, hailing from Bagerhat, and Arif Azad, a salesman of a pharmaceutical company.
Police said the bus of Hanif Paribahan hit a parked truck at Jalalpur bazar.
Sub-inspector of Sherpur Highway Police Station Humayun Kabir said the Sylhet-bound ‘Hanif Paribahan’ bus from Dhaka collided head-on with the stationary truck in the area around 9:30pm, leaving three people dead on the spot and 34 others injured. The other four died at hospital.
The injured, including Awami League leader Mostak, his son Monayem and daughter Mim, were rushed to Osmani Medical College Hospital where four other injured people died after admission around 2:00am on Saturday.
Traffic on the busy road remained halted for two hours following the road accident.
Meanwhile, angered by the incident, locals set fire to a bus of ‘Hanif Paribahan’ at Kadamtali around 2:00am on Saturday.
Later, a firefighting unit rushed in and doused the flame.
