Dhaka, Feb 27 (UNB) – Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir on Wednesday claimed that seven Jamaat-Shibir activists have been arrested for their involvement in the killing of blogger Rajib.
“Rajib’s autopsy report suggests Jamaat-Shibir workers killed him,” the minister said when a delegation of Peshajibi Sammannoy Parishad, led by Justice AFM Mesbahuddin Ahmed, met him at his ministry and placed their nine-point demand.
Their demands include immediate arrest of Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman, killers of Rajib, journalists couple Sagar-Runi and attackers of journalists in the city on Friday.
The minister appreciated the demands and assured them of trying his best to meet the demands.
“There has been significant progress on investigation into the killing of Rajib and we hope that the trial will begin at the shortest possible time,” said Alamgir.
Rajib, who was actively involved wit Shahbagh movement demanding capital punishment of war criminals, was stabbed to death at Polashnagar in the city’s Pallabi area on February 15 (Friday night).
About Sagar-Runi killing, MK Alamgir said: “The government is eager to unveil the mystery behind the murder. But, time is required to find out the truth.”
On demand for the arrest of Mahmudur Rahman, the Home Minister said: “He should be arrested. We’re now examining on which laws we will take measures against him.”
Referring to the attacks on journalists, he said, “We’ve already ordered the law enforcers to arrest the attackers. No one of the attackers will be spared.”
About the on going war crimes trial, the Home Minister said those who will side with the war criminals will also be brought to book.
In replying to a query on the Jamaat’s countrywide daylong hartal for Thursday, State Minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku said: “The law enforcers will try their best to resist the troublemakers to save public life and property during the hartal.”
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Wednesday called a dawn-to-dusk countrywide hartal for Thursday to push for their demands, including the release of party leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee facing war crimes trial.
