Several distinguished citizens have said they have been shocked and frustrated by the recent events in Narayanganj.
Cultural personality Nasiruddin Yusuf issued the statement in an e-mail on Friday.
“We are shocked and angered by the abduction in broad daylight and brutal murder of Narayanganj City Corporation Panel Mayor Commissioner Nazrul Islam and his four associates and respected lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver,” the statement said.
The statement was signed by Prof Salahuddin Ahmed, Prof Zillur Rahman Siddiqui, artist Qayyum Chowdhury, Prof Serajul Islam Choudhury, Prof Anisuzzaman, Prof Ajay Ray, human rights activist Sultana Kamal, Dr Sarwar Ali, Ramendu Majumder, Mofidul Hoque, Ataur Rahman, Mamunur Rashid and Nasiruddin Yusuf.
Narayanganj City Councillor Nazrul Islam and his four aides, and senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver, were abducted from the city’s Adalatparha on Sunday.
Their bodies were recovered from the river Shitalakhya in the last two days.
The statement said the failure of the law-enforcing agencies to investigate abduction, rescue victims and arrest criminals had resulted in this crisis.
“In this situation, criminal gangs and groups who want to create political instability are getting the opportunity to execute their evil plans.”
The citizens demanded that the government “deal strongly with the conspiracies afoot to deter Bangladesh from its ascent to a tolerant democratic society”.
