Six people including three of a family drowned when a small boat capsized in the river Nabaganga in Sadar upazila of Magura early Saturday.
The victims were identified as Bizit Pramanik, 70, Nirapadah Pramanik, 62, Prazit Pramanik, 57, Kazal Mondol, 55, Uttar Pramanik, 50, and Dipro Pramanik, 13.
Of the victims, Prazit and Nirapadah were brothers while Dipro was the grandson of Nirapadah, reports our Magura correspondent.
Locals said the boat carrying nearly 17 people capsized around 1:30am in the mid river when they were returning to their village at Shreekundi after attending a ‘Kirtan’ (religious singing session of Hindu community) at Barai village, just the other side of the river.
After the incident, the six victims remained missing while the others managed to swim ashore, the locals added.
Mohammad Zahangir Alam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said the boat capsized due to overloading as it has the capacity to carry only 10 to 12 persons.
Locals recovered the bodies from Buzruk area in Shreekundi village around 6:00am.
Mohammad Hanifuddin, assistant deputy commissioner of Magura, and Mohammad Tabibur Rahman, Sadar upazila nirbahi officer, visited the spot in the morning and handed over Tk 25,000 to each family of the victims.
